......eating out
Aubeterre - There are several restaurants in Aubeterre. At the lower end by the river there is the hotel which has recently changed hands and is recommended, and a vaguely Italian Pizza/pasta place - not bad. There is also a cafe on the river beach. Up in the square there a four or five to choose from, mostly offering inside and outside eating. You can choose from the ‘Alba Terra’ a bit upmarket to a good creperie, the local Hotel de France and a brasserie.
Le Grelis - To be found on the D674 between Parcoul and Chalais, on the LH side facing Chalais. This is a traditional lunchtime restaurant run by two dedicated local women. The 'menu' costs €10 per person for five courses including wine. There is no choice but the food is good, honest and usually delicious. A very French experience.
Parcoul - The Pink Flamingo - Tex Mex style restaurant in the centre of the village. Typical fare, very busy at the weekends - best to book.
Chalais - Possibly one of the best restaurants in the area is to be found in the chateau in Chalais (the cultural hub of the area). You must book - just pop up there in the car (steep hill). Great french food and very reasonable prices. A must if you like food. They often have musical evenings. But beware we recently suffered four hours of an Argentinian folk singer with no means of escape!! There is a take away pizza joint next to the Intermarche supermarket. Grab a card when you go shopping and telephone your order in advance - saves waiting, which can be long. There are various cafes for lunch too.
Bonnes - Le Sud is a typical bistro. The food is pretty good but basic, the decor a bit worrying (everyones’s a critic!) Reasonable cost again. Take a stroll around Bonnes before or after your meal. Lovely houses and peaceful river. Advisable to book for the weekend.
Les Essards - The restaurant is in the square (the square IS the village) Very simple and very friendly. Traditional French food - no frills. Cheap if you drink the house wine (pichet de vin). You can also buy wine and tobacco here to take out (emporter).

Lusignac - Further afield (via Aubeterre and St Séverin) you find Lusignac. Very English village with a busy fun restaurant with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. Good for a Saturday night. Kids can run around. Al fresco dining.
